Issued by Authority of

FRATERNAL ORDER OF EAGLES

THE FINAL TRIBUTE TO DECEASED MEMBERS

The wishes of the family and relatives of the deceased shall be consulted in connection with holding the funeral ceremony. This ceremony may be conducted at the time of the burial, or if desired, it may be held prior thereto, at the place where the body lies. If such be done, the evening before the burial is suggested

The Worthy President and the Worthy Chaplain shall take their places at the head of the casket, the Worthy Chaplain to the right and the Worthy President to the left.

Worthy President: Brothers and friends, we have assembled here today to pay that last sad tribute of love and respect which the Fraternal Order of Eagles renders to its dead. It is a time-honored custom in our Fraternity that amid the busy turmoil of this life we pause to note the departure of our Brothers.

Yet, it is not a final parting. The Fraternal Order Of Eagles teaches that we shall meet again, and that the tender associations of life are broken only to be reunited. Whether we look into the living eyes of those we love or gaze upon the placid faces of our dead, love divine comforts us with the blessed assurance that this relation is eternal

He, who lies here, was both friend and Brother. Knowing that he believed in the eternal principles of the Order, we are comforted. He valued Liberty, loved Truth, was swayed by Justice in his dealing with all men, and was gracious and brotherly in the observance of true Equality. He believed in the existence of a Supreme Being, the Father of us all, giver of every good and perfect gift, and in this belief he died in the hope of a blessed immortality beyond the grave. He bore the trials of life and fought its battles, till tired and weary of the struggle, he fell asleep. For him eternal rest remains. No mortal has ever had enough of riches, honor and wisdom, when death ended his career. The eye is never satisfied with seeing; endless are the desires of the heart. Man devises new schemes on the graves of a thousand disappointed hopes. Discontent abides in the palace and in the hut, rankling alike in the breast of prince and pauper. Death finally terminates the combat, and grief and joy, success and failure, are all ended. Like a child falling asleep over his toys, man loosens his grasp on earthly possessions only when death overtakes him. The master and the servant, the rich and the poor, the strong and the feeble, the wise and the simple, all are equal in death. The grave levels all distinctions, and makes the whole world kin. "The night is gone, and with the morn those angel faces smile, which he had loved long since and lost awhile."

The sleep on which he has entered we call Death. But in the light of eternity:

"There is no death;

‘The stars go down

To rise upon some fairer shore

And bright in Heaven’s jeweled crown

They Shine forevermore."

Funeral sermon or eulogy by Clergy

In addition to the religious ceremony or eulogy, the worthy President or someone by him designated, may, with the consent of the family, deliver a fitting Eagle eulogy.

Worthy President: Let us all rise and remain standing while the Worthy Chaplain offers prayer.

Worthy Chaplain: Let us pray.

PRAYER

Our Father in Heaven—Thou, who art the resurrection and the life—hear us at this time. In the presence of death we realize our entire helplessness and dependence upon Thee. We pray for the living and the dead. Bless those who mourn, and may they be comforted. Take unto Thy-self the soul of the departed. May the tender ties now broken be reunited bey9ond the grave, and may he rest in peace in the bos9om of his Father and his God. As members of this great Brotherhood, help us ever to remember our obligation to each other and to Thee. Inspire us with the hope of a blessed immortality and teach our duty toward Thee and our fellowmen.

Amen.

All: Amen.

Hymn: "Nearer, My God, to Thee," or some other appropriate hymn to be chosen by the friends or relatives of the deceased.

The Worthy President and the worthy Chaplain shall step to the head of the casket and the Brothers shall form about the casket.

Worthy  President:

My Brother Eagles, gather about the casket. Earth’s proudest station ends in—"here he lies." The grave speaks in no uncertain language of that end. Man is born to die. The living of today becomes the dead of tomorrow. We pass from the stage of action and others take our places, but the world moves on the same as before, like the restless ocean that rolls on its resistless course, while many a noble craft has sunk within its depths, and by the sounding shore are those who mourn and weep for the unreturning sail.

But our duties are to the living. The dead need neither our care nor our ministrations. If the sympathies of life extend beyond death’s portals, the happiness of the blessed may be enhanced by a knowledge that their old companions are cheerfully taking up their tasks and rejoicing in the gladness that remain to them. Justice to the dead unites with duty to the living in commending the merciful provision by which all-healing time beguiles humanity from the bitterness of its grieving for love and lost ones.

As we surround the remains of our departed Brother, let us remember only the good qualities of his life and emulate his virtues. The Worthy Chaplain will offer prayer.

Worthy Chaplain: Let us pray.

PRAYER

Our Heavenly Father, in this hour of trial and affliction we turn to Thee. In Thy Providence Thou has called our Brother hence, and we bow in humble submission to Thy will. He was dear to us and we loved him as a Brother. May he how realize the love of a Heavenly Father, which passeth all understanding. He bore the trials and burdens of this earthly life, and weary of it all turned to Thee for rest. We commit him to Thy tender care. Comfort the living and those near to him by ties of relationship and brotherly affection. Help us realize that the parting is only for a short season, and that we shall meet again in the Grand Aerie beyond, where the faults and frailties of this earthly life are forgotten, and all become perfect in the love of an Infinite God.  Amen.

All: Amen.

Music.

CEREMONY AT THE GRAVE

(To be given only at the grave)

Worthy President:

We beseech Thee, Almighty God to be gracious unto our departed Brother, who leaves now this earthly sphere to live in the realm of Eternity, and we beseech Tee to bestow Thy goodness on his sorrowing relatives and friends, and grant them peace of mind and contentment so that they may better bear the burden that is theirs.  Amen

Worthy President:

Takes up a handful earth and deposits it in the grave saying:

Brothers, the dust has returned to earth, and the spirit to God, who gave it. Have mercy on us, O Lord.

Pause a moment

Soul of the departed, rest in peace.

All, In unison:

Soul of the departed, rest in peace.
