To All Nebraska Eagles
This is just a note and a reminder to all Nebraska Eagles about The Lew Reed Spinal Cord Research Charity. Hi! I’m Dave Costello From South Omaha Aerie #154 and I am the State Chair for Lew Reed for 2006-2007. I received this honor by appointment from State WP Nels Peterson at the state convention. Since I have been our aerie chair for two years, I was only too happy to accept. Then around the first of August I received a letter from the national director of the Lew Reed Spinal Cord Fund that I had been appointed as West Central Regional Chair. Again, gladly.
Let me give you a little background on all this. A few years ago our WP asked me if I would handle a charity for our aerie and I agreed. I was allowed to choose and I naturally chose Lew Reed. Why naturally? I suffer from Spinal Stenosis. Now I am not in a wheelchair or need help to get around, because of progress in the field of spinal cord research I can play golf (although not well), I can work in my yard, and even do some small home projects. After two spine operations I consider myself very lucky. Without the research this wouldn’t be possible. So, I am happy to help in this effort in any way I can.
Spinal cord research benefits people of all ages, from birth defects (Spina Bifida), to combat injuries suffered by our service people, to old age maladies that affect the spine. See, once the spine is injured IT DOES NOT HEAL! Hopefully in my lifetime this will be taken care of.
Now for the pitch. I ask all of you to get together at your aeries and come up with new and fun ways to raise money for this charity. We had a golf tournament. The first year was just okay, but this last year it really took off to where we were in the top five fund raisers for Lew Reed in the country. IT CAN BE DONE!
If you have questions feel free to contact me. My e-mail is opd761@cox.net (please title it Lew Reed). I can be reached at Aerie 154 by mail. Also let me know what you have going for Lew Reed and how it goes, since it appears I do have to make a report to the Grand. So, help me out and I’ll do anything I can to help you.
Fraternally,
Dave Costello
